With all the beauty that wood veneers offer, nothing can be more spectacular than:
        BURR VENEERS

There are many different species from around the World but only a few give rise to a burr. We are often asked:" Why do some logs produce burr and others not".

Well, this is a very difficult question to answer, but it seems reasonable to say that when a tree suffers a stress it can give rise to a burr. Stress may be in the form of climatic conditions, virus, fungus, pollution etc.

But there are some species that never give a burr. Who has ever seen an Ebony burr or a Santos Rosewood burr or a Koto burr?

It seems that forest grown trees will be less likely to produce a burr because they are protected by the surrounding trees and there may be a lack of viruses or fungi to attack the tree. Very few burrs come out of African or South American jungles for example.

But in Europe there are many trees planted in isolation, along roads, in gardens and in the countryside for example. The lack of protection and sometimes isolation of these trees means that they are more inclined to trauma of some kind and more likely to produce a burr such as in Ash, Olive ash, Walnut, Planetree, elm, Oak, Chestnut to name but a few.

It seems an anti climax that a stress to the tree can cause a deformation of cells that result in a beautiful pattern that is highly prized by woodworkers.

Burrs are a big speciality of ours and we have a Worldwide reputation for stocking a comprehensive list of different burrs. We have been sourcing burrs for over 50 years and our London Warehouse currently stocks over 260,000m2 of different species or burrs from around the world.

Presently our Dubai warehouse has over 6 different species and we are building our stocks all the time.

Reliance Veneer's burrs are used for:
  • Car Dashboards of luxury cars.
  • The interiors of Super Yachts and Corporate Jets
  • High quality fit outs
  • fine furniture
And more recently in the business and first Class lounges at Dubai International Airport Terminal No 3.Concourse A.

Reliance Veneer TT supplied all the Walnut and Walnut burr for both classes of lounges.

DXB will have the first- ever concourse designed for use by A380 aircraft. The concourse is the first " purpose-built" facility for the big plane.

The terminal has 20 gates, covers an area of 528,000 m2 and is part of a $7.8 billion upgrade of Dubai International Airport which operators say will become the world's busiest airport by 2015.

The below photo's of burrs are just a sample selection of our stocks, we carry many more species.

TREES OF SPECIAL INTEREST

A few years ago our London factory produced this magnificent Walnut Burr.

Over 1550m2 was produced from just one tree and the length was over 270cm long. It was sold to one of the most prestigious car manufacturers in the UK.
Below are a couple of examples of solid burrs. As you can see the shapes are all different and the skill we have aquired over the years is to be able to maximise the beauty of the grain to produce veneers of excellence.

Nearly all burrs are peeled on a rotary lathe and our machines are amongst the largest available.

  • Nearly all Burr logs are known as wild logs meaning that they can grow anywhere and have not been planted by man. On the other hand Orchard grown logs have been planted by man as can be seen from the photo below.
  • This beautiful Walnut orchard has been planted for the walnuts that the trees produce. The burr is a by product of the grafting. You can see the lower part of the tree shows a bulge and this is the burr that will mostly be underground.
