The botanical name is Juglians Regia loosely translated as "Nut of the Gods" or "Jupiters royal acorn" as in anciant times it was believed that the Gods dined on walnuts, hence regia or regal, royal. Walnuts are the oldest tree food known to man, dating back to over 7000 B.C. Franciscan priests brought the walnut seed to California in the early 1770. For centuries the oil of the nut was used in the preparation of fine paints for artists. Historically the bark of the black walnut was used by several Native American Indian tribes, including the Cherokee for medicinal purposes. The USA exports walnut lumber to over 67 different countries Worldwide During World War I, the hardy wood of the black walnut was used for making airplane propellers. NASA has put powdered walnut shells to use as thermal insulation in rocket nose cones; the powder can withstand extreme temperatures without carbonizing. Walnut Burrs are formed by grafting English walnut onto an American walnut root stock. English walnut trees do not grow so well in the California soil but are much prized because of the tasty nuts. As the tree gets older the harvest of nuts will be less. Eventually the tree is removed to make way for planting a new tree and the burr is cut from the tree to be produced into veneer.

THE FULBECK HALL WALNUT TREE This magnificent Walnut Tree planted on the Fulbeck Hall Estate in England was over 300 years old when it blew down in a storm. RELIANCE VENEER converted the tree into veneer to yield from the main trunk 2500m2 of beautifully figured grain with widths up to 70cm wide and panel length. The second length of the trunk together with massive branches yielded 20,000m2 of figured walnut veneer in door and furniture lengths. One part of this tree has been selected by Bentley Motor Cars for a limited edition of dashboards for their famous and beautiful cars.
